Tips for a Healthy and Flavorful Summer

Summer’s Coolest Beverage: On a hot summer day, a refreshing glass of iced tea offers a go-to way to chill out. But this thirst-quencher has become a year-round beverage of choice. Many of us are skipping sugary sodas, making tea one of the most consumed drinks in the world. Over 85% of millennials say they are keen on tea.

The popular drink serves up several health benefits. Black, green, white, and oolong teas are high in antioxidants, which can rid your body of toxins and may help prevent cancer. A batch of home-brewed iced tea has the highest levels, but even bottled teas contain just as many antioxidants as some fruits such as blueberries and strawberries. Tea is also a good source of disease-fighting flavonoids.

It’s easy and inexpensive to brew a pitcher of your own since it requires just two ingredients: water and the tea of your choice. The simplest method is cold brewing. Combine 8 cups cold water and 10 tea bags in a pitcher and let the tea refrigerate for 6-12 hours.

For hot-brewed iced tea, bring the same amount of water to a simmer, then remove from the heat and add 6 tea bags. Let steep for several minutes, until it’s the strength you like. Pour the tea over ice or let it cool and transfer it to a pitcher and refrigerate. If you prefer to use loose tea for either method, use 3 to 5 tablespoons and strain the tea before serving.

Don’t settle for a plain pitcher: adding flavor is where the fun comes in! Infuse it with natural sweetness from fruit, such as raspberries or slices of peach or mango. Adding lemon or lime to your tea provides even more antioxidants. Mix it up with some lemonade or fruit juice. Dress it up with garnishes of mint leaves.

SPF is Your Bff All Year Long: You may think you’re made in the shade when you’re sitting under an umbrella or a tree, but you always need sun protection, not just in the summer. You need to apply it throughout the year. The sun’s indirect and reflected ultraviolet rays can reach your skin and sunburn. Protect yourself whenever you venture outdoors by remembering these watchwords: slip, slop, slap, and wrap. Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap with a sun protection factor of 30 or higher and reapplying it every two hours, especially if you are sweating or in and out of water.

Step Out Into Nature

Walking is a free and easy form of physical exercise, but taking steps outside can benefit your mind as well as your body. Researchers say that a walk in a park or other natural surrounding appears to affect the part of the brain that controls negative thoughts and emotions. In a study of people who strolled in a green space, scans showed less activity in that brain region, and the walkers reported fewer worrisome thoughts and improved mental health.

Smart & Tasty Salad Ideas: Light yet filling, salad is a go-to meal during summer and fall weather months. Healthy additions can enhance the nutrition of a plate of leafy greens. Since they’re loaded with nutrients, fill your salad with fresh vegetables. Choose a colorful mix to get the most vitamins and minerals. Get a dose of healthy fat with avocado slices or a spoonful of crunchy nuts or seeds. Pack on protein with a serving of grilled chicken or fish, a hard-boiled egg, or a cup of beans. Top it all off with a splash of heart-healthy olive oil and vinegar or black pepper, herbs, and lemon for a boost of flavor.
